"disconnected network drive" in virtual pc guest
I have Windows 7 running on Virtual PC as a guest and the host is Vista with ACHI enabled. This is my first experience with a beta OS and Virtual PC. Windows 7 is running extremely well here. The shared folder folder on the host OS (Vista) shows up in explorer as a Disconnected Network Drive on the guest OS. This is the case in both Windows 7 and Vista running as a guest on Virtual PC SP1. I can see files in the shared folder and I can create a folder in it and write to it from the guest. It seems to work for simple things like .txt and merging .reg files. But I try to execute a large setup file there I get an error warning. It seems like I have to copy the files to the guest OS to get then to run. Once there everything is fine. The problem is that it is extremely slow to copy files from the shared host file to the guest. I have installed Vista as a guest and the behavior is exactly the same.So the issue may be with Virtual PC or something with the Vista host. Yesterday I copied 4 GB from a DVD drive on the host and it took over 7 hours, but it was successful. Now I am trying to copy 8 GB from the folder that shows up a a disconnected network drive and it is about a third dome with over 8 hours remaining. I also noticed the discovery we extremely slow. Avast anti virus is installed on both the host and the guest and I shut both down but it seems to make no difference. I'll post the exact error I get if it helps, but I don't want to lose the data that is very slowly coping at the moment.Windows 7 works fine otherwise so far on Virtual PC. In fact it is faster than Vista Ultimate as a guest.

Hi,the shared folder function within Virtual PC is very buggy. I would recommend to setup a network and to transfer the files with network shares. You can change the network configuration of the VM within the settings of the VM.Peter Forster, MVP Virtual Machine, Austria

One thing that seemed to help was going into the shared folder permissions on the host and allowing everything I could find. Then the file transfer sped up to a near normal speed.
